Looking at Our Loss Through Rose Colored Glasses

After what appeared to be our Oomfteenth turnover, I finally check my Twitter timeline to see FSU haters revel in our embarrassing defeat. I’m seeing people going at each other’s throats, bringing up FSU player’s criminal records, belittling other schools and “exposing bandwagon fans.” There’s nothing wrong with trash talking, but when people are trying to hit nerves and hurt feelings, that’s when it’s gone too far.

Throughout the history of sports, great teams have never bowed out gracefully. They have always taken a hard fall. Look at Brazil’s match against Germany in the recent World Cup, the Heat’s crushing defeat to the Spurs last season, hell, look at how ‘Bama went out against Auburn last year. Whenever a great team loses it’s always a heartbreak. Say what you want, Florida State has a great football team. Regardless of who they played, winning 29 straight games is an impressive feat. Not every player, team or coach can end their season or collegiate career in a picture perfect way. Even Hollywood knows this. Not every sports movie ends with a championship win. FSU’s players should not hang their heads in shame tonight, it’s been a great run and they have nothing to prove to anyone. Haters and fans alike need to give credit where credit is due. Oregon won because they were a better team. It’s not because they wanted it more than us, it’s not because we didn’t have enough time to prepare; they were just better. It happens. There were a few calls that slighted us but let’s not act like a couple of pass interferences would completely turn the tides.

Let’s get one thing straight: You’re not a bandwagoner if you go to the school or its accompanying community college. If somebody who was never interested in Whatchamacallit University, spends a semester there as a student and becomes an avid fan of all things Whatchamacallit, there’s nothing wrong with that.

If FSU vs Oregon was the only game in which you’ve seen either team all season and you want to say something sly, don’t. If you go to a school with an unranked football team and decide to fling your poo at FSU: A. You really aren’t in a position to talk trash and B. Don’t be surprised when an FSU student/fan flings back with jibes football or non-football related. People will say and do anything when their backs are against the wall. If you can give you can receive.

This post is not meant to throw shade at anyone. A majority of my friends don’t go to FSU and I wasn’t raised a Seminole fan so all of this is amusing to me. Believe it or not, athletics isn’t everything when it comes to college. If you take away FSU or Oregon’s football team, you’re still left with a great school.

There are always going to be prideful losers. It’s one thing to say you’re still proud to be a Nole, I am too. But it’s another thing to bring up our undefeated record and 2013 championship as a defense mechanism. That’s going to get old really quick. Sometimes the best thing to do when your team loses is be quiet. I understand where both sides are coming from. I’m a die-hard hater myself. If the Lakers fell off the face of the Earth, I’d be a happy man. To my fellow Noles I say, let the haters have their moment. We had ours and we’ll continue to. Because at the end of the day, Florida State University is a great school with a lot to be proud of. The same applies for Oregon, UCF, UM, FAU, and every school for that matter. Except for UF. They suck.
